Body care: sunburn

        BODY CARE: SUNBURN
The Egyptians worshipped the sun and used its healing powers to good effect, though perhaps they drew the line at sunbathing. Our health is dependant on the sun in various ways. The short ultraviolet rays known as UVB provide us with the proper synthesis of Vitamin D, which is needed to prevent rickets, malfunction of the bones, and to improve the health of our teeth and calcium absorption.
The long-wave rays known as UVA are responsible for calming the nervous system, stimulating the blood vessels and improving circulation.
Over-exposure to the sun can cause premature ageing and skin cancer. It dehydrates the skin leaving it leathery, wrinkled, patchy and dry. There are many other factors involved in how our skin reacts to the sun. Some of the hazards are: prescribed drugs such as some forms of oral contraceptive pills, tranquillisers, antibiotics and antifungal preparations which can cause pigmentation, photosensitivity, rashes and bums. Bleaching products, medicated cosmetics, coal tar, and products containing PABA should also be avoided.
The commonsense approach is to stay out of the sun between 12pm and 3pm, wear a hat, protective clothing, a pair of sunglasses and slap on a natural sunscreen.
Sesame seed oil applied daily is an effective natural sun filter- use as an all over body oil.
Almond oil rubbed into the skin helps prevent freckles and sunburn
