Stress and pain
STRESS AND PAIN
Stress can lead to physical as well as psychological disturbances. These are most commonly treated by medication such as tranquillisers, muscle relaxants, sleeping pills, stimulants, antidepressants and mood-enhancers. Stress may be congenital, muscular, immunological, environmental — including accident and trauma situations — or infectious, neoplastic (associated with cancer),chemical, degenerative, emotional or psychological. Typical stress reactions are seen from preparing the body for fight, or for flight, such as changes in the heart's output, blood pressure, and the movement or non-movement of the intestines. Anxiety is usually prominent. It can be treated with minor tranquillisers, or by explaining the cause of the pain and by reassuring the patient.
Sleep disturbance is common. So are appetite changes and a decreased interest in sex. These occur along with increased irritability, the withdrawal of interest and the weakening of relationships. There is also increased preoccupation with everything about the body.
