Osgood schlatter's disease - introduction

        OSGOOD SCHLATTER'S DISEASE - INTRODUCTION
Young bones grow from a plate of cartilage situated at their ends. These are known as epiphyses and bone growth stops when the epiphysis closes over and becomes ossified as the cartilage is converted to bone.
This growing plate of cartilage may be damaged in adolescence and lead to a number of relatively minor disorders.
If you feel the upper end of your lower leg just below the knee cap you will notice a hard bony lump. This is the tibial tubercle. During childhood there is an epiphysis there and it can be injured, particularly during adolescence.
Girls and boys active in sports can develop the condition known as Osgood Schlatter's disease when the tubercle becomes enlarged and tender to touch and active movements involving the big muscle at the front of the thigh cause pain. The tendon from the quadriceps muscle at the front of the thigh attaches to this tibial tubercle.
