Self-help prevention for various conditions: accidents

SELF-HELP PREVENTION FOR VARIOUS CONDITIONS: ACCIDENTS

To most people an accident is an 'act of God', a random occurrence or the result of carelessness or thoughtlessness. But just because accidents occur quickly, often instantaneously, doesn't mean that they are not preventable-many are. Studies show that even the most apparently random of 'incidents' occur according to recognizable patterns and are in fact often quite predictable. So in preventive terms many accidents are not random happenings at all.
Unintentional injury is the fourth leading cause of death in most westernized countries and in the US caused 104,000 fatalities in 1977. Homicides and suicides are not included in this figure!
Accidental injury is the leading cause of death under the age of 40 in westernized countries and among the young contributes more deaths than all other causes combined.
Approximately one in three of the US population has a non-fatal injury sufficient to make them have a day away from their usual activities every year, and about half of these injuries need medical attention. Accidental injury accounts for about a quarter of all permanent disability in most western countries. For example, it is estimated that more than 20,000 people in the US alone suffer from on-going epilepsy as a result of a car accident.
Even with the best planning in the World some people will still suffer 'accidental' injuries because of psychological and emotional factors. People will continue to have rows and marital problems, to be depressed, to feel ill and so on, all of which can make them drive badly, drink too much and fall down the stairs, cut themselves and so on. In addition, certain personality types 'need' to indulge in dangerous or potentially dangerous pastimes which expose them to injury and even death. We cannot possibly abolish all accidents, but we can definitely reduce them. Here are just a few tips as to how to achieve this in day-to-day life. Most accidents occur at home so let's start there.
